About the dress:
The meticulously crafted creation featured hand-cut English lace and French Chantilly lace used throughout both the bodice and skirt with individual flowers which were hand-cut from lace and appliqued onto ivory silk tulle. The lace appliqué for the bodice and skirt was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace. For the bodice, individual flowers were hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.
The gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress also showed of Kate’s slim figure with a cinched waist that flows into a skirt designed to echo the opening of a flower, with white satin gazar arches and pleats. The train measures around eight feet and the ivory satin bodice draws on the Victorian tradition of corsetry and is a hallmark of Alexander McQueen‘s designs.
What Pippa Wore:
Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton, also wore a dress by Alexander McQueen’s creative director Sarah Burton in a form-fitting, ivory satin-based crepe gown with a cowl front.
Pippa’s dress had 58 gazar and organza covered buttons, mirroring the bride’s dress.
“It has been the experience of a lifetime to work with Catherine Middleton to create her wedding dress, and I have enjoyed every moment of it,” Sarah Burton said. “I am delighted that the dress represents the best of British craftsmanship. Catherine looked absolutely stunning today, and the team at Alexander McQueen are very proud of what we have created.”
What the younger girls wore:
As for the younger members of the bridal party – they wore dresses by British designer Nicki Macfarlane who handmade the dresses, alongside her daughter, in the same fabric as Kate’s dress. The miniature version were adorned with pale gold silk sashes, and the lining of each was hand-embroidered with the bridesmaid’s name and the date of the wedding. So cool!
The younger members paired their dresses with classic Mary Janes from England’s Rainbow Club, and were made of satin and fastened with Swarovski crystal buckles.
Each girl wore a lily-of-the-valley hair wreath, (influenced by the topper Kate’s mom Carole wore at her own wedding), and carried a mini bouquet, similar to Kate’s.
The little ladies were Lady Louise Windsor, 7, the Hon. Margarita Armstrong-Jones, 8, and 3-year-olds Grace van Cutsem and Eliza Lopes.
What Kate Middleton’s wedding dress will inspire in upcoming seasons:
We’re going to see lots of romantic lace, sleeves, floral appliques, and v-neck inspired dresses.
Ivanka Trump and Nicole Richie also wore dresses with sleeves for their big day and we can be sure that many brides-to-be will be opting for this look in their own wedding gowns for the next few seasons.
In fact, I am sure that replicas of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress will be selling out around the world!
